$130 for 5 weeks - 10 hours. (Cost includes lab materials.) Meets on Tuesdays, 12:15-2:15, from February 25 to March 25.
This course develops concepts and skills in the biological sciences.
- Students will be able to identify plant and animal cells and understand the cell’s basic function as the building block of all living things.
- Students will prepare wet mount slides from a variety of animal and plant sources and become comfortable with using a microscopes to examine these specimens.
- A variety of dissections will provide students with a general introduction to comparative anatomy and introduce them to the safety and procedures expected in this type of laboratory experience.
- Students will examine the earthworm, grasshopper, crayfish, and frog using proper dissection techniques. They will be able to identify the major organs of the various systems in each of these specimens.
- If time allows, students may also analyze owl pellets in efforts to help understand ecological concepts including food chains and webs, habitats and niches, and the predatorprey relationship.
