Home School Chemistry & Physics Lab (Lisa Sequeira)
$130 for 5 weeks - 10 hours. (Cost includes lab materials.) Meets on Tuesdays, 12:15-2:15, from January 14 to February 11.
This course will cover basic topics in chemistry and physics.
- Students will build models of atoms using Moly-pod kits and be able to identify atoms as the building blocks of all matter. We will briefly look at a variety of bonding types to understand the many compounds that we use.
- Substances will be examined using chromatography, a scientific technique used to separate various substances in a mixture.
- Students will explore polymers and the many uses they have today and make their own polymers to use in the laboratory.
- Students will investigate acids and bases. Both laboratory and self-made indicators will be used to investigate the pH of various substances. Students will perform a series of experiments identifying the reactions of acids and bases with metals; also providing students with the opportunity to learn proper safety and respect for materials in the chemistry lab.
- The physics portion of the class will introduce students to the basic concepts of Newton’s Laws and simple machines. Students will explore these concepts using Lego Technics® and will be challenged to create solutions for a set of problems. A review of forces within structures and structure design will also provide students with the opportunity to be creative while solving a bridge building problem and participating in an egg drop contest.
